The GIFT (Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer) procedure is a variation of the techniques used for IVF, utilizing many of the same steps. With GIFT, after retrieving oocytes from the woman's ovaries under ultrasound guidance, the oocytes and sperm are later placed in the woman's fallopian tube to facilitate fertilization in the body.

The procedure of placing the recovered eggs and sperm into the fallopian tubes requires laparoscopy (a minor surgical procedure). This differs from IVF, in which the recovered oocytes are placed in a dish in the laboratory and fertilized outside the body.

This technique is used less widely than IVF. Although  with gift fertilization can occur in the natural environment, IVF has the advantage of checking for fertilization in the laboratory and transferring the morphologically best embryos

GIFT is a procedure available to women who have normal fallopian tubes and, ideally, to couples for whom male factor infertility is not involved.

In this procedure the gynaecologist examines the cavity of the uterus, cervix and the uterus / fallopian tube junctions. In other words, the interior of the uterus.
Diagnosis can be formed on different conditions that affect fertility such as adhesions, polyps, fibroids and uterine malformations.
This technique uses a tiny surgical camera (Hysteroscope) connected to a monitor enabling the gynaecologist to visualize the inside of the reproductive system.
The Hysteroscope is inserted vaginally and needs no incisions (as opposed to the Laparoscopy).

Usually, it is performed not under general anaesthetic but with local anaesthetic only or slight sedation.

The patient can leave the hospital a few hours afterwards.
